Charlton Athletic Panini Sticker History
20th August 2017

Hands up who remembers back in their youth ripping open a new packet of Panini stickers shouting "Got, Not Got" and then trying swap anything for the Charlton Athletic Badge. I remember having the albums, not sure I fully completed one, but where they ended up is any ones guess. It was until recently, with the programmes I need becoming more expensive and difficult to find, that I turned my attention to stickers and football cards. I did not realise how many featured Charlton Athletic or Charlton Athletic players and how far back some of the cards go.

For now though I thought I will concentrate on Charlton Athletic's Panini Sticker history and give people a checklist of sorts if they need it.

Charlton were first featured in Football 78 (Season 1977/78). In those days stickers were not issued for each player for second division teams, meaning Charlton supporters had to make do with a gold shiny badge and a team photo. The badge sticker was shared with Cardiff City.

Panini Sticker History
(20th August 2017)
The following season (1978/79) Football 79 was released and once again the Charlton badge and team photo were the two stickers all Charlton supporters were looking for. The badge had a fabric feel to it, and this season was not shared with another club.
When Football 80 was released during the 1979/80 season there was a pleasant surprise for Charlton supporters as the collection had been extended to include second division player stickers. There were two players to each sticker and I guess lots of excitement at getting 'Killer' or Les Berry! The badges were back to a shiny material and again Charlton were paired with Cardiff City. With the extra player stickers the team group was dropped. The full list of players / manager stickers was Andy Nelson, Nicky Johns, Peter Shaw, Les Berry, Phil Walker, Colin Powell, Derek Hales and Martin Robinson.
With Charlton Athletic playing in the third division in season 1980/81, rather disappointingly only one Charlton stickers was available in Football 81. This being a team group.
Back in Division 2 for the 1981/82 season, but still Football 82 sticker book could only provide 2 Charlton stickers, a gold shiny badge and team group.
Football 83, brought out for the 1982/83 season reverted back to second division clubs sharing badges and having a team photo. The badges were once again shiny and silver in colour. Charlton's badge was paired with Chelsea.
At the risk of repeating myself, Football 84, was along the same lines as the previous year. Shared badges, this time gold, but once again Charlton were paired with Chelsea and team photo. These covered the 1983/1984 season.
Season 1984/1985 (Football 85) and second division clubs were still sharing badges. Back to silver but this time Crystal Palace shared the badge sticker. As always a team photo was also available.
Silver badges continued in Football 86 (Season 1985/86) and Charlton were paired with Carlisle United, along with a team group sticker.
With Charlton's promotion to Division One for the 1986/1987 season, there was lots for a young Addick supporter to be excited about when the Football 87 was released. For the first time since Football 80 Charlton players were featured. Nicky Johns is the only player to feature in both seasons. There were 14 player / manager stickers, a badge, team group and an historical kit sticker. The players / manager featured were Lennie Lawrence, Nicky Johns, Peter Shirtliff, Mark Reid, Steve Thompson, Mark Aizlewood, John Humphrey, John Pender, George Shipley, Alan Curbishley, Mark Stuart, John Pearson, Robert Lee and Jim Melrose. Below is a selection of these. The full set can be viewed in the checklist at the bottom of this page. This will also be the case for the future seasons on this page.
Once again Football 88 saw 14 player / manager stickers, along with the usual badge (shiny sliver) and team group. The players / manager stickers for the 1987/1988 season were Paul Miller, Mark Reid, Peter Shirtliff, Steve Thompson, Steve Gritt, Ralph Milne, Lennie Lawrence, Bob Bolder, Andy Peake, Colin Walsh, Steve MacKenzie, Garth Crooks, Jim Melrose and Mark Stuart. Every year there were always noticeable absentees from the squad of players. This year being Rob Lee and John Humphrey.
The 1988/1989 season saw a decrease in the number of player / manager stickers to 13 in Football 89. The badge was still a shiny silver sticker and there was also a team photo. John Humphrey and Robert Lee both made it back into the season's squad stickers, along with Bob Bolder, Paul Miller, Mark Reid, Peter Shirtliff, David Campbell, Steve Gritt, Steve MacKenzie, Lennie Lawrence, Garth Crooks, Carl Leaburn and Mark Stuart.
For Football 90 Panini stuck with 13 player / manager stickers, the popular shiny silver Badge and team photo. The 1989/1990 list of player stickers were Lennie Lawrence, Bob Bolder, John Humphrey Mark Reid, Joe McLaughlin, Colin Pates, Steve MacKenzie, Andy Peake, Colin Walsh, Garth Crooks, Carl Leaburn, Robert Lee and Paul Williams.
With Charlton falling out of the top division, fans of Panini and Charlton were left disappointed for a few seasons until the 1994/1995 season when Panini released Football League 95. I believe Panini no longer had the rights to produce stickers for the Premier League and turned their attention to the Football League. The set consisted of 12 players, a badge (you guessed it, silver and shiny!), team group and a special kits sticker. Colin Walsh and Carl Leaburn were still involved from the previous sticker set and joined by Mike Salmon, Steve Brown, Phil Chapple, Alan McLeary, Peter Garland, Paul Mortimer, John Robinson, Garry Nelson, Mark Robson and David Whyte. This set is not the easiest to find and I am missing a few from this collection.
Panini continued with their Football League set in 1995/1996 with Football League 96. As with the previous year the set consisted of 12 players, Mike Ammann, Stuart Balmer, John Humphrey, Richard Rufus, Lee Bowyer, Keith Jones, Shaun Newton, Colin Walsh, Carl Leaburn, Garry Nelson, Mark Robson and David Whyte. A silver shiny badge and team group made up the collection. Notice the kit in the stickers is the same as the previous season. Now wouldn't it be nice if teams kept their kit more than one season!
After having a team group in all the previous Panini sticker books Charlton had been part of, they decided the 1st Division 1997 set would only consist of a silver shiny badge and 13 player stickers from the 1996/1997 squad. Players included were Mike Salmon, Stuart Balmer, Anthony Barness, Steve Brown, Richard Rufus, Jamie Stuart, Paul Mortimer, Shaun Newton, John Robinson, Bradley Allen, Carl Leaburn, Mark Robson and David Whyte.
Panini decided they would produce a sticker album Football 2003. This collection only lasted 4 days on the shelves back in the 2002/2003 season. Topps took out an injunction to get the product removed. This obviously makes it a difficult collection to obtain. The stickers go for £5 and over on Ebay. I personally only have one of the the 12 player stickers that were available. The Player stickers were Dean Kiely, Richard Rufus, Paul Konchesky, Jonatan Johansson, Graham Stuart, Gary Rowett, Claus Jensen, John Robinson, Scott Parker, Chris Bart-Williams, Jason Euell and Matthias Svensson.
The Final Panini sticker set Charlton have featured in is Coca-Cola Championship 2009. This set has the largest number of Charlton stickers (23 in total). Stickers included a silver shiny badge, The Valley, Kits, 4 star players (Nicky Weaver, Andy Gray, Darren Ambrose and a shiny Luke Varney), captain sticker (Mark Hudson) which was split into two. The squad photos were smaller and came as a pair on stickers. All Charlton players were paired with non Charlton players. Those depicted were Nicky Weaver, Kelly Youga, Mark Hudson, Jonjo Shelvey, Matt Holland, Andy Gray, Svetoslav Todorov, Darren Ambrose, Luke Varney, Scott Wagstaff, Lloyd Sam, Jonathan Fortune and Grant Basey. Nicky Weaver also appeared for a third time on a larger sticker.
