Charlton Athletic Post War Non League FA Cup Opponents

6th July 2017

Today we take a look at the programmes that have been produced for Charlton Athletic post war FA Cup matches against Non League opposition.

1955/1956 Charlton were drawn at home to Birmingham League side Burton Albion in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. The match was played 7th January 1956. Charlton won the match 7 - 0 and advanced to a 4th round tie at home to Swindon Town.

The programme has 8 pages and cost 3d. The front page would be banned nowadays, with half the cover an advert for Red & White Cigarettes. Page 2 is Club Notes, which was a look at Burton Albion and their players. Page 3 consists of a nearly full page Football League Division 1 results grid and Charlton's goal scorers for the season. The centre pages show the team line-ups surrounded by adverts. A fixtures and results page came next. These include the Football League, Football Combination and London Mid-Week League. Page 7 is Echoes Across The Valley and the back page includes Half-Time Scores, a continuation of Club Notes from the font page and Football League Div. 1 league table, in which Charlton sat in 5th place above the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.

A couple of seasons onto the 1974/1975 season and Charlton are still having to compete in the 1st round of the FA Cup. A trip across the water on 23rd November 1974 sees Charlton take on Chelmsford City from the Southern League. A narrow 1 - 0 victory sees Charlton set up a second round match away to Peterborough United.

Maidstone United of the Southern League were the visitors to The Valley on 9th January 1979 for a 3rd round tie.
